Geographic Distribution of Convective Activity in southwestern North America during July

Figure 2. Convective activity during the month of July as derived from satellite imagery. Regions of continuous deep convection (strong thunderstorms) are represented by the darkest shades (the darker the shade, the more frequent deep convection is). The Sierra Madre Occidental experience the greatest frequency of convection, while northeastern Mexico and Texas experience little (adapted from Douglas et al. 1993).
