Volcanic contribution to Cryptobiotic Soil?

A comment by Michael Riversong

In a meeting with a Native American scientist, i was told that
cryptobiotic soil originates with a volcanic ash fall. Do any
known documents support this idea? One interesting link is that
in the 1300's there were some massive eruptions in Northern
California -- there is a chance some of the ash could have carried
to the Four Corners Network region.
