19 March, 1996 Dear David, Thanks for your interest in the CD's. I hope I haven't "oversold" their utility. They were created as research tools, and don't have extensive background information. But I think that interested high- school students might find them useful for learning about the oceans. I've included two short write-ups intended to help you get the software up and running. One is for Macs, the other is for PCs, with considerable overlap. The CD's themselves work with both systems. These write-ups also describe some aspects of the data that you might point out to your students, or that you might entice them to discover for themselves. The SST CD is older than the sea-ice volume, and the DOS compiler I used to build the display program improved in the intervening time, so I have included a floppy disk with a slightly newer version of the display software for that CD. You may not need that, but it's there if you do. The DOS software on the sea-ice CD is up-to-date. Please let me know how it goes. Especially please contact me if you have trouble getting the software to work. Best regards, Peter Schweitzer Tel: (703) 648-6533 FAX: (703) 648-6647 email: pschweitzer@usgs.gov
